![]() ![]() I'm in kind of a crazy circumstance and a lot of people suggested I do a sale and I thought I'd give it a shot organizing pr around it. I'm a one person band over here and I made a game that people seemed to like. there aren't really many other word games like it right now I think that kind of stuff has led to its success. Look at the popularity of crosswords or sudoku. I think that simplicity makes the difficulty very accessible. There aren't power ups or strange things happening all the time. It's a really straightforward strategy game, where spelling happens to be the way you interact with it. I think spelltower has done well because it satiates that itch. There haven't been any really serious strategy games with words in a long time. how many words can you spell, how many anagrams can you make, in 2 minutes. Games that use words but really privilege gamey-ness over standard word puzzle games which mostly just focus on spelling and time. Theres been a bit of a new wave of word games lately, with stuff like welder and puzzle juice. I think because its different than a lot of other games. money is harder, but money is always difficult. I think the appstore is the best place right now to make a name for yourself with really unique and interesting apps/games. but essentially friends making lists of apps, being able to bundle apps with bundle specific extras, apple taking some focus off the top 25 and doing more collections or daily sales, and having the game playing market generally become more educated slowly over years of playing games will all help. ![]() There was a really good blog post a few weeks back of some good ideas for the app store that I can't seem to find. Lots of people have had success with higher priced games (the avernum guys are a good one to note). You don't -have- to price your game at 99cents and hope for everyone to buy it. At the end of the day, that audience is out there and you have to decide if you want to cater to it or not. Its true theres a lot of garbage out there, but Apple's curation is quite good, and there are a lot of people who like those superficial games.
